What is ADHD?

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects attention, impulse control, and executive function. Executive function is the set of skills that help you plan, prioritize, start tasks, and manage time. ADHD begins in childhood. Many adults are diagnosed only later, when the demands of work, school, or family outgrow the coping strategies they built. The American Psychiatric Association estimates that ADHD affects about 2.5% of adults.

Common signs of ADHD in adults

Adult ADHD rarely looks like the hyperactive child stereotype. More often, it shows up as:

  • Inattention: losing focus in conversations or reading, missing details, misplacing things, and forgetting appointments or deadlines
  • Executive dysfunction: procrastinating on important tasks, trouble organizing work, and underestimating how long things take
  • Restlessness: feeling driven by a motor, difficulty relaxing, or needing to stay busy
  • Impulsivity: interrupting, impulsive spending or decisions, and quick frustration
  • Emotional effects: overwhelm, low self-esteem, and anxiety that builds from years of feeling behind

Many of these symptoms overlap with anxiety, depression, sleep problems, and thyroid conditions. That is why a careful evaluation matters more than an online quiz.

How an ADHD evaluation works at Vigor Wellness Space

  1. Comprehensive intake. We review your current symptoms, childhood history, work and relationship patterns, sleep, substance use, and medical history.
  2. Standardized screening. You complete validated rating scales, which help measure symptoms objectively.
  3. Ruling out look-alikes. We consider conditions that can mimic or coexist with ADHD, such as anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, and sleep disorders. Treatment is most effective when the whole picture is clear.
  4. A personalized plan. You leave with a clear explanation of the findings and recommended next steps.

Your evaluation starts with our mental health evaluation, which gives your provider a full baseline.

ADHD treatment options

Effective ADHD care is usually a combination of approaches:

  • Medication, when appropriate. Both stimulant and non-stimulant medications can improve focus and impulse control. Your provider reviews the benefits, risks, and any prescribing requirements with you. Your response is followed through medication management visits.
  • Skills and structure. Practical strategies for planning, reminders, time-blocking, and breaking big tasks into steps.
  • Treating what comes with it. Anxiety, depression, and sleep problems commonly accompany ADHD. Treating them often makes ADHD symptoms easier to manage. Learn about our anxiety treatment and insomnia care.
  • Lifestyle foundations. Regular exercise, consistent sleep, and steady meals measurably support attention and mood.

Frequently asked questions

Can adults be diagnosed with ADHD for the first time?

Yes. Many adults are first diagnosed in their 20s, 30s, or later. A diagnosis requires that symptoms were present in childhood, even if nobody recognized them at the time.

Do you prescribe ADHD medication through telehealth?

Medication decisions are made after a full evaluation. Some ADHD medications are controlled substances with specific prescribing rules. Your provider will explain what applies to you and whether any in-person steps are needed.

Do you treat children with ADHD?

We currently accept new adult patients.

Do you take insurance?

We do not accept insurance. Care is fee-for-service. Call or text (770) 676-3330 for current pricing.
